New campaign to tackle HAVS
Bad Vibrations, a new campaign tackling the widespread confusion surrounding Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), has been launched by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF).
BSIF’s Measurement and Instrumentation Special Interest Group — made up of test houses, certification bodies, manufacturers, and distributors— recognised that while there’s plenty of excellent literature on HAVS, it can feel overwhelming to those using the tools and equipment that put them at risk.
Responding to this, the subgroup created an easy-to-understand guide called “Bad Vibrations.” This guide is designed to be accessible to anyone wanting to learn about HAVS without wading through dense technical manuals.

Kent store prosecuted over ‘serious risk to life’ fire safety breaches
A Kent business has been fined after admitting to serious fire safety failures that ‘endangered both staff and customers.’ Miller Food and Wine Limited, based in Lower Stone Street, Maidstone, was sentenced at Medway Magistrates’ Court on September 3, following a prosecution by Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS).
The prosecution followed an inspection by fire officers in March 2022, which identified significant fire safety concerns, including the absence of essential fire precautions and breaches in compartmentation of the building, which posed a serious risk to life in the event of a fire.
The business pleaded guilty to 10 offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, including failure to comply with a restriction imposed by Prohibition Notices.

Lack of first aiders concerns a third of employees
New research from health charity St John Ambulance shows that a lack of trained workplace first aiders is causing feelings of anxiety among employees.
The study reveals that almost three in ten (29%) employees have experienced times when no one present in their workplace was first aid trained. Some of the other findings include:
-
34% of employees feel anxious that some days they have no trained first aiders in the workplace
-
Nearly a quarter (22%) of the workforce has never had any first aid training
-
Almost four in five (79%) workers genuinely care about their colleagues and show it through small everyday actions
-
St John Ambulance is encouraging organisations to train up more workplace first aiders as part of its Save a Life September campaign
