Brothers fined for failing to protect public from cattle

Two brothers have been sentenced for failing to protect members of the public from their cattle.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found Andrew and David Turnbull failed to offer and display signs of an alternative route to a public right of way in their field in the Coalsgarth Valley, North Yorkshire.

HSE prosecuted the pair following the death of former teacher David Clark, who was killed by a herd of cows while crossing the right of way on 21 September 2020.

The 59-year-old had been running with his two dogs when he was surrounded by a numbers of cows, and then struck to the ground.

Witnesses reported that one of the cows then turned back and ran towards Mr Clark, causing a fatal blow to his chest.

Neglecting eye health could be costly, experts warn

New data reveals that almost half of UK employees believe their job poses a risk to their eye health, yet many workplaces are failing to implement adequate safety measures.

Legal and health and safety experts warn that neglecting eye health in the workplace could lead to costly claims, reduced productivity, and serious long-term vision issues for employees.

A survey commissioned by eye health company NuVision Biotherapies found:

  • 48% of UK employees believe their job puts their eye health at risk.

  • 1 in 8 industrial workers report frequent eye injuries or strain.

  • 65% of office staff experience symptoms like dryness, headaches, and blurred vision due to excessive screen use.

Meanwhile, NHS data obtained via FOI reveals that in the past year alone:

  • Over 57,000 emergency hospital visits were recorded for eye-related injuries.

  • More than 82,000 cases involved foreign objects entering the eye.

  • Over 201,000 patients reported eye pain at emergency departments.

Members of the public asked to return Boots Paracetamol 500mg tablets due to packaging error

People who have purchased Boots Paracetamol 500mg Tablets 16s (Item code 81-99-922, Batch 241005, Expiry date 12/2029) are advised to stop using the product immediately and return it to a Boots store for a full refund, because of a packaging error.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a medicines recall alert due to a packaging error where the foil blister inside the carton incorrectly states ‘Aspirin 300mg Dispersible Tablets’ instead of ‘Paracetamol 500mg Tablets’. The Boots Company PLC and the supplier, Aspar Pharmaceuticals Limited, have confirmed that the tablets in the blister packs are Paracetamol 500mg and not aspirin, and are conducting a full investigation into the issue.

Members of the public, including carers, should check if their pack has the batch number 241005, which can be found on the bottom of the box. If affected, they should stop using the product immediately and return it to a Boots store for a full refund, with or without receipt.

Accelerating towards equality

Our video series on women in health and safety leadership features interviews with a range of inspiring women working at the top of the profession.

The three-part series, hosted by IOSH members Carly Hughes CMIOSH and Nishma Mistry, includes advice and tips to help women break through into senior occupational safety and health leadership roles.

Ahead of International Women’s Day on 08 March, we’ve picked out some of the insights from the series that tie in with this year’s theme of how to ‘accelerate action’ on gender equality.

Our Vice-President and Chartered Fellow Michelle Stonley has spent all of her career in the traditionally male-dominated construction and engineering sectors.

Michelle picked out the value of acting with integrity, being polite to all and taking an empathetic approach when dealing with other people.
