Select Safety Spotlight: Evacuation Safety & New and Expectant Parents

As part of May’s Hazard of the MonthOffice, we’re highlighting two key areas: Evacuation Safety and New and Expectant Parents

Evacuation Safety

It is vital that your staff are well-trained and feel confident in their ability to respond quickly in an emergency situation, to ensure everyone is able to evacuate safely.

Everybody on site in your workplace should know:

  • Routes for evacuating safely to a designated safe area
  • Locations of designated assembly or meeting points
  • Locations of fire alarm call points, firefighting equipment, first aid kits, spill response kits, and civil defence kits
  • Methods used to raise the alarm during an emergency
  • Important emergency contact numbers, including Emergency Services, medical centres, and poison control
  • Emergency response procedures for various types of incidents
  • Key emergency personnel and their responsibilities
  • The importance of keeping aisles, walkways, and exits unobstructed
  • The purpose and importance of conducting evacuation drills

New and Expectant Parents

Once you have received written notice that an employee is pregnant, you must carry out an individual risk assessment and make any necessary accommodations to support them and keep them safe. This is applicable to workers who:

  • are pregnant
  • have given birth in the last 6 months, or
  • are currently breastfeeding

The risk assessment should include:

  • A review of your existing general risk assessments for pregnant workers and new mothers
  • A discussion to see if there are any conditions or circumstances with their pregnancy that could affect their work
  • Any concerns about how work may affect their pregnancy
  • Consultation with safety representatives

The risk assessment should be reviewed and adjusted as the pregnancy progresses, and also if their activities or workplace changes.
