Georgia’s Journey: 6 Months as a SHEQ Trainee

Welcome back to Georgia’s Journey!

In this series of blogs we are following SHEQ Trainee Georgia’s progress as she works towards becoming a fully-qualified H&S Consultant.

Let’s see what she’s been up to this past month, as she reaches the half a year mark!

What has been your biggest challenge this month?

I think my biggest challenge at the moment is waiting for my result dates – I’m keen to get cracking and carry on progressing so having to hang fire before I can continue working towards my goals can be a little frustrating at times.

Unfortunately, these things can take a while, so I am working on other tasks in the meantime!

Is there anything you would like to try learning about in the coming months?

I think I would most like to learn about Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (2015).

These regulations apply to all building and construction work, including new build, demolition, refurbishment, extensions, conversions, repair and maintenance, so definitely something I want to have a good understanding of!

What is a skill that you’ve worked on this month?

This month I’ve been working on my legal knowledge. Previously I have been able to recognise the rights and wrongs of health and safety mostly based on common sense and muscle memory, however I’m trying to incorporate real theory behind my reasonings now. To do this I’ve been in and out of the HSE website constantly, to learn the legislation behind the reports I’ve been writing.

How are you getting on with your NEBOSH?

I am really enjoying studying for my NEBOSH! I just recently sent off my first mock paper and have received really good feedback on it but I’m feeling very confident for my exam in just over a month. The next stage is looking at completing the risk assessment section which looks more closely into workplace risks such as manual handling and COSHH, so I’m looking forward to understanding those risks more.
