As part of August’s Hazard of the Month, Responsibilities, we’re highlighting two key areas: Managing Health and Safety & PPE.
Managing Health and Safety
Employers are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of their business operations, including managing risks and protecting employees and others affected by their work. To achieve this, you must have systems in place to:
- Plan the necessary actions
- Do what’s required to implement those actions
- Check that control measures are effective
- Act to address any issues
Using this Plan, Do, Check, Act approach helps you maintain control of risks, create a safer working environment, and manage health and safety effectively. It also supports ongoing improvement by helping you spot issues, respond promptly, and review your processes regularly.

PPE
Selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task is crucial — but just as important is ensuring that the PPE is sourced from reputable suppliers and meets legal requirements. Any PPE you purchase must comply with product supply legislation.
Regulation 2016/425, as incorporated into UK law, sets out the essential health and safety standards PPE must meet before it can be sold in the UK. These regulations apply to workplace PPE and are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Employer responsibilities
If you provide PPE to your employees, you must:
-
Ensure the products are UKCA marked (CE marking may still apply in some specific situations)
-
Verify that PPE is supplied with a Declaration of Conformity and clear usage instructions
-
Make sure the equipment is used strictly in line with the manufacturer’s guidance
The HSE also offers a reporting platform for any PPE that does not comply with these legal requirements.
