Safety Spotlight – Stress Awareness & Mindfulness

As part of January’s Hazard of the MonthStress, we’re highlighting two key areas: Stress Awareness and Mindfulness.

Stress Awareness

Employers have a legal duty to identify and manage workplace stress risks in order to safeguard employee wellbeing.

There are six main factors that can contribute to stress at work:

  • Demands: Difficulty managing workload or job pressures.
  • Control: Limited influence over how tasks are carried out.
  • Support: Inadequate guidance, resources, or assistance.
  • Relationships: Problems with colleagues, including conflict or bullying.
  • Role: Unclear job roles or responsibilities.
  • Change: Poor engagement or communication around organisational change.

Assessing each of these areas is essential for effectively managing stress in the workplace.

Employees may also display signs of stress, including:

  • Becoming more withdrawn
  • Increased absence from work
  • Arriving late more frequently
  • Noticeable mood changes or mood swings
  • Appearing anxious or tense
  • Heightened emotional responses
  • Reduced motivation and confidence

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment—aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without becoming overwhelmed or reacting automatically. It is a skill that everyone naturally possesses; the key is learning how to access and develop it.

Regular mindfulness practice has been shown to support mental health and overall wellbeing. It can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also enhancing focus, self-awareness, and performance.

Consistency is essential to experiencing the benefits of mindfulness. There are many techniques available, and with regular practice, mindfulness can become an integrated part of everyday life.

Through our online mindfulness training, you will explore:

  • How mindfulness supports mental wellbeing and helps reduce stress
  • The nine attitudes of mindfulness and the benefits of each
  • Practical techniques for mindfulness meditation and yoga
  • Simple, informal mindfulness practices that can be easily woven into daily routines

If you’d like a more formal, more conversational, or more marketing-focused version, I can tailor it further.
