Businesses have the power to make a difference and help the environment through its practices and policies. Keep reading for some top actions your business can take to make an impact:
1. Track your greenhouse gas emissions
Emissions are split up into three scopes:
- Scope 1 – directly produced by your business
- Scope 2 – from purchased energy
- Scope 3 – emissions the business is indirectly responsible for e.g. staff travel
Tracking your emissions can help you to see areas of improvement, and to measure if any changes you implement are working.
2. Set realistic emission reduction targets
Set targets that are achievable and use these to measure your progress in reducing emissions against. To hold the business accountable and show dedication to your goals, you might consider publishing your goals on your website.
3. Source materials sustainably
As much as possible, prioritise purchasing resources for your business from known sustainable sources – this is goes not only for materials used as part of your business practices (e.g. materials for construction or manufacturing), but also for general business purchases such as electronics.
Look for certifications, for example:
- Fairtrade
- Soil Association Organic
- FSC®-certified wood products
4. Check your supply chain
How much do you know about the policies and ethics of the other businesses you work with?
Ask to see suppliers environmental policies and procedures, and keep this in mind when adding companies to your supply chain!
5. Switch to green energy
If possible, look at ways of incorporating or even fully switching your energy supply to renewable energy. You don’t have to generate this energy yourself – you can switch to a clean energy supplier with minimal effort and no disruption to your service. Learn more here.
