Safety Spotlight: Environmental Awareness & Resource Efficiency

As part of June’s Hazard of the Month, Environmental, we’re highlighting two key areas: Environmental Awareness and Resource Efficiency.

Environmental Awareness

Everyone in an organisation, both employees and management, can make a difference to the environmental impact a company has, and has a responsibility towards the environment to do what they can to reduce resource consumption and waste.

By understanding resource use and improving resource efficiency and waste management, both individuals and the company as a whole can save money and reduce their environmental impact. Steps to achieve this include:

  • implementing a waste hierarchy
  • identifying workplace ‘waste’ and ‘resources’
  • understanding the importance of resource management and the environmental impact it has
  • understanding environmental legislation, responsibility and management systems
  • understanding how small actions can help to reduce our carbon footprint

Our Environmental Awareness course covers this and more, giving learners a clear picture of how they can make an impact in their workplace.

Resource Efficiency

LandfillMaking changes to our daily lives, no matter how small, can help to reduce our carbon footprint and improve life on our planet.

Resource efficiency, which refers to the use of resources in a sustainable manner while minimising environmental impacts, is an effective strategy that can be used to help the environment in simple and achievable ways. By increasing their efficiency, businesses can reduce costs and contribute to developing a green, resource-efficient, low-carbon circular economy.

One of the best ways to be more resource-efficient is to follow the waste hierarchy – this outlines the best steps for waste management in order to prevent waste disposal where possible, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill where it emits pollutants.

Following the hierarchy will help businesses to make the most of their resources and reuse them through recycling, creating a circular economy. It can also introduce ways to use water, electricity and fuel more efficiently, reducing costs and making the resources you have available to you last longer.

The resources we rely on from the Earth are finite  – if we exceed the rate that they can be replenished they will eventually become depleted. By using our resources smartly, we can achieve more with less and reduce lasting impact on our environment.

Find out how your business can improve its resource efficiency with our Resource Efficiency Online Course. This course is beneficial for organisations that would like advice on efficient use of resources in business and how to make their organisations more sustainable, but is also suitable for individuals looking to help the environment.
