Self-employed builder jailed after accident
On Monday, we reported on a tragic incident in which a three-year old girl was left with life-altering injuries after an untethered piece of timber fell onto her from scaffolding. The accident, which occurred in July 2018, occurred when the timber being lifted had been inappropriately secured to the pulley system via an unsuitable knot. The HSE, speaking after the sentencing, highlighted the preventable nature of the accident.

Illegal gas work leads to prosecution
On Tuesday, we reported on the imprisonment of a Staffordshire-based gas fitter after he was found to be undertaking illegal gas work. A comprehensive HSE investigation highlighted that the fitter in question was not registered with the Gas Safe Register, which is fundamentally designed to increase professionalism and transparency. As a consequence of his lack of registration, the fitter was not competent to carry out gas works.

Construction company fined £800k
On Thursday, we reported on an enormous fine, issued by the HSE to Bam Nuttall, after an inappropriate and unsafe lifting operation severely injured a worker. The victim suffered three fractured vertebrae when an expanded polystyrene block came loose and fell onto his head. HSE Inspectors highlighted how the use of chains and strops in a suitable fashion would have easily prevented the injury.

Grenfell: Have lessons been learned two years on?
This Friday marks the two-year anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, during which 72 people were killed when a tower block caught fire.
